THEY ARE LIKE VISITORS FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY

Somehow they are different
from us now.
It is as if they traveled
back from the dark side
of the moon and left a part
of themselves behind.
They seem baffled
by the things we say.
They are like visitors
from another country.

They smile and laugh,
but it is not the same smile
and laugh
as they had before.
They are our neighbors,
but when we knock
on their doors,
they are never at home.
The friends we once knew
have moved away.
